This
map shows the general relief or topography of the Upper Conemaugh watershed,
including the Stonycreek River draining from the south and the Little Conemaugh
River draining from the North. Both rivers receive the rain and snow that
falls on the western side of the Allegheny Ridge (large white mass running
from the right side to the bottom center of the map) and the rain and snow
that falls on the eastern side of Laurel Ridge (large white mass on the
upper left side of the map).
Conemaugh Gap is clearly visible cutting through Laurel
Ridge near the top left of the map. At the extreme top right, the headwaters
of the Little Conemaugh originate at high elevation, and the other Little
Conemaugh tributary visible -- entering from a southwesterly direction
-- is the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh. The deep, narrow valley of
the North Branch Little Conemaugh River also is clearly visible near the
top right corner, and the valleys of Laurel Run and Hinckston Run are clearly
visible just upstream of Conemaugh Gap in the top-center of the map.
At the extreme bottom-center is the Stonycreek River headwaters,
which cut through the Upper Gorge between the white high elevations. The
first visible tributary entering from the left is Quemahoning Creek, with
Quemahoning Reservoir also visible. Just below the mouth of Que Creek is
the mouth of Shade Creek, which has tributary vallies visible in the Allegheny
Ridge to the east. Just north of Shade Creek, the valleys carved by Paint
Creek are clearly visible, although the stream itself is not. Likewise,
further north, the valleys carved in the Bens Creek watershed are clearly
visible coming down off Laurel Ridge in the left-central area of the map.
